Dr. Jim Thorne
Dr. Jim Thorne earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1978 and his medical degree in 1982, both from University of Alberta. He has been a primary care family physician for 30 years. He obtained his CASEM Diploma in Sport Medicine in 1995 and completed certification of added competency (CAC) in sport and exercise medicine in 2016. He has had a long-time interest in Sport Medicine covering several sports events and doing Sport Medicine consultations since 1998.
He has a clinical interest in acute sport medicine injuries, Chronic Sport related injuries and the non-surgical management of Osteoarthritis.
He has been on the medical staff for Team Canada Hockey since 1995 covering more than 60 Hockey Canada tournaments, and currently holds the position of head physician for the Calgary Stampeders Football Club since 1998, and has worked with Calgary Flames Hockey Club since 2003.
With Hockey Canada, he has had the privilege of being the Team Doctor for the last 4 Olympics, starting in 2002. Salt Lake was the first gold medal in 50 years, 2010 was a home win in dramatic fashion and he was also in Sochi covering another Gold medal performance for the first Gold on big ice outside of North America. He has also covered 11 World Championships, The 2004 World Cup of Hockey, 1 World Juniors, 15 Spengler Cups and many other Hockey Canada events.
With the Calgary Flames he was able to cover and enjoy the 2004 Stanley Cup run all the way to a Game 7 in the Final, and he continues to be cover all home games.
With the Calgary Stampeders football club, he has been to 7 Grey Cups and enjoying wins in 4 of them. He attends to the team both at home and on the road.
In the past, he has also covered the Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club from 1995-2003, The Calgary Cannons AAA Baseball Club from 1991-2001. He has also covered Olympic sports at the World Cup level in Speed Skating, Bobsleigh, Luge and Skelton, Freestyle Skiing and Badminton.
He is a born and raised Calgarian and he has one daughter. He continues to enjoy many activities such as Hockey, Badminton and Fitness. He is an outdoors pursuit enthusiast who particularly enjoys hiking, biking and skiing.
