PERSONALIZED BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION PROGRAM

bfrprogram.jpg

The blood flow restriction program at Group23 Sports Medicine was established to assist patients gain muscle strength and size in an injured or weak muscle group while reducing the stress placed on the recovering limb. The goal of this technique is to help speed up recovery and help patients #RiseAbove and get back to movement. Blood flow restriction can also be used to reduce muscle atrophy, performance, and strength development.

It has been generally accepted that muscle hypertrophy requires high-intensity training utilizing loads of at least 70% of 1-repetition max (RM) or lower loads (30-50%RM) until failure. However, there is mounting evidence that now supports low-load resistance training (20-40%RM) combined with blood flow restriction can similarly induce muscle hypertrophy and strength gains. Blood flow restriction training can be used when the goal is to increase muscle size and strength with an individual that is load compromised. For example, after most surgeries and musculoskeletal injuries, there is a period of time where you must respect the surgical site and tissue healing timelines by employing lower load exercises. It can also be used when regular exercise is just too painful, or with athletes looking to gain a competitive edge in addition to regular training.

How does the program work?

STEP 1
The program does require a personalized training program and frequent use of the blood flow device. As a result, the first appointment is a one-on-one appointment with a trained physiotherapist. Below is a list of what you can expect in this 30 minute appointment:

  1. Patients will be screened for potential contraindications to the treatment,

  2. Patients will be taught the principles of the technique and how it can facilitate recovery

  3. Patients will be given a demo of the machine to allow them to book the machine on their own time and use it proficiently on their own.

  4. Patients will go through 1 full exercise session using the machine with full physiotherapy supervision.

  5. An exercise program will be printed for the patient to bring to future appointments.

STEP 2
Once you have gone through the first one-on-one appointment with a Group23 physiotherapist and have become trained in how to use the specialized equipment, your training sessions can be booked online and at times that best suit your needs. When you arrive to your second appointment the blood flow restricted machine will be ready and waiting for you. You will connect yourself to the machine as you learned during your one-on-one appointment and perform the exercises that were given to you. A physiotherapy assistant can help you if needed.

The frequency of sessions will be discussed and determined at your one-on-one meeting and will vary depending on goals and injury.

Is there a cost to the program?

The cost of the program varies depending on how many sessions are required for optimal recovery. The first meeting with your physiotherapist is insurable. The blood flow restriction exercise sessions are not insurable and has a fee of $20.00 + GST per session.
